August Travel Tip: Martha’s Vineyard

Located in the southern coast of Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard is an island made for travelers looking for fresh seafood, beautiful beaches, and beautiful historic neighborhoods.

I’m a big believer in letting yourself take breaks in order to keep up with a hectic schedule; and for the past several years, my family and I have taken a summer vacation together. We’re all super close (My wife Erica, mom, dad, brother Corey and his wife who is also named Ericka) and we’ll pick new places to experience together. Food and drink are always a top priority when we’re deciding where to stay.

This year, we went to Newport, RI and Martha's Vineyard. You should definitely plan your own trip out East if you haven’t been before. Here’s a quick rundown of where we stayed, what we saw, and what I recommend:

Martha’s Vineyard

There are five lighthouses on Martha's Vineyard. Plan a walk or bike ride to explore them all and get incredible views of the coast.

Stay at Harborview Hotel in Edgartown and it was easily one of the best hotels I've ever stayed at. It’s right next to a ton of cute shops and great restaurants.

  • While staying here, we rented bikes and took a cruise along the coast to some of the lighthouses, hung out at the hotel’s relaxing pool, ate a ton of oysters, and even saw a special guest at our hotel for dinner…former president Barack Obama.

  • Another incredible amenity offered at the Harborview Hotel is you can take out their Mercedes GT53 AMG (WANT!) to Oaks Bluff, another town in Martha's vineyard famous for its gingerbread houses.

Eat at Midtown Oyster Bar. (DEFINITELY get oysters and lobster rolls while you’re in town, you can’t go wrong at any of the local spots.)

Newport

Newport, RI.

Newport, RI.

Stay at 41 North Hotel right on the harbor! We loved the location and took nightly walks around town trying a ton of seafood and oysters.

Tour The Breakers mansion, which was the summer home of the Vanderbilt family. Erica and I always love to book architectural tours while on vacation. The Breakers is the grandest of Newport's summer "cottages" and a symbol of the Vanderbilt family's social and financial preeminence in turn-of-the-century America.

Eat at Sarah's Bar at Bouchard Restaurant, which was easily one of my favorite meals I’ve had in a long time. Bouchard's is one of the highest rated French restaurants on the east coast, reservations book months in advance, however, if you're lucky you can catch one of the seven seats at Sarah's Bar. Our last night in Newport we were fortunate enough that the bartender allowed us to pull up an extra stool so all 6 of us could enjoy! This is one of the coolest little bars I've been to and they serve the restaurant's entire menu! Sometimes when you're traveling, luck can be on your side, this was one of those nights!

Overall the trip was a great mix of fun and relaxation. If you’re looking to plan a trip out East, then just let me know if you have any Qs or want some more recs and I’d be happy to give you the lowdown. You can also check out Erica’s IG post that captures some highlights of the trip.
